Indoor Tanning

The skin pigmentation disorder of Vitiligo, caused by the malfunctioning of the cells that make pigment in the skin (melanocytes), is a common skin disorder around the globe. This skin disease destroys the melanocytes in the skin, the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose, as well as genital and rectal areas), and the retina (inner layer of the eyeball). As a result, smooth white or light pink patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. The hair that grows in areas affected by Vitiligo usually turns white as well.

Scientists today have gained a much better understanding of the chronic skin disease of Vitiligo through intense and thorough research than in the past. Though Vitiligo was considered untreatable at one time, nowadays, a number of medical, surgical and adjunctive therapies are available and have proven to be quite effective. The main goal to treat this chronic skin disease is to improve one’s appearance by covering the depigmented spots on the body caused by Vitiligo. One of the latest researches done have proved that one way to treat Vitiligo is through Indoor Tanning.

Topical PUVA is one of the many treatment options available for Vitiligo and is performed with UVA light exposure once or twice a week. However, recently, UVB has been used as an alternative to PUVA. This type of therapy can be administered like PUVA and given up to three times a week. Because it is simpler to administer, this type of therapy seems to be gaining wider acceptance.

Indoor Tanning is a ‘sunless tanning’ that may help conceal imperfections by adding color to depigmented areas. It is done at salons via sprays. Indoor Tanning may help but it largely depends on how big the depigmented spots are and how dark (or light) their other pigmented area is.

According to a latest research done in New York, indoor tanning might be addictive for a few young adults and the ones who got hooked on tanning beds could be prone to apprehension and substance abuse issue too. To do this research, the research team took 421 students from the northeastern area of the US and asked them to complete the questionnaire about the indoor tanning habits, substance use, anxiety and depression.
